Now the fragile seers are in greater danger than ever before. In desperate need of answers, Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter leader among the Others, has no choice but to enlist blood prophet Meg Corbyn’s help, regardless of the risks she faces by aiding him.   Meg knows each slice of her blade tempts death. But Others and humans alike need answers, and her visions may be Simon’s only hope of ending the conflict.   For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the battle is threatening to break right on Meg and Simon’s doorstep...

Book Vision In Silver (A Novel of the Others Book 3) Review :

Vision In Silver (A Novel of the Others Book 3) Kindle Editionby Anne BishopAnne Bishop's talent for creating a large cast of characters is put to the test in in VIS. The cast is also complex and interesting. From the HFL leader Nicholas Scratch to Elayne Borden to the Lizzy, Ms. Borden's daughter, to Meg and Simon, the heart of the story, each character is so real, they could walk out of my Kindle. The Others, the terra indigene, who inhabit the North American Continent in a complex and frightening way. The Others include vampires, shifters, and witches. Meg is a blood prophet, a young woman who can prophecize when her skin is cut. Most of the blood prophets become addicted to the rush of the prophecy and cut themselves. This is a bit of a trigger warning if the reader has a history of 'cutting' or other forms of self mutilation. Bishop handles this with the same respect and compassion as she did with the darker, cruel themes in her Black Jewels series. This third installment of the series brings more humans into contact with the Others. In some cases, particularly that of Lizzie and her father, those interactions are for the better. Humans First and Last, however, with their anger toward the others and who believe is a warped version of Manifest Destiny. Bit by bit, a crime story blends with an alternative history nicely with the relationships in the Courtyard. The crime? A child takes a train, alone, to see her father, Monty, at the Courtyard. In her hands is a love worn Boo Bear. Inside that bear, there is a discovery waiting to be made.Bishop uses the limited third person narration in an amazing way. The voice or style of writing fits into the character it follows. The cassandra sange, for instance, seem to have a problem with over-stimulation. When the narration focus on them, there is a theme of new things wearing them down. It is quite easy to identify whom the focus is. Authors with smaller casts can't do it with the grace of Bishop.Several minor plot lines revolve around the main concerning the secret Boo Bear is hiding. They are braided together with expertise.I highly recommend any and all Anne Bishop books. She is a rare talent who can see the light in the darkest of souls.5 stars out of 5https://www.amazon.com/Vision-Silver-Novel-Others-Book-ebook/dp/B00KWFZ7CE
But I just can't--maybe because I loved the Black Jewels so much. With the exception of Tangled Webs (a weak effort), those books and that world were so complex, so compelling, and so endlessly expanding in narrative possibility. These books just aren't even close. They do try to mimic the structure of the Black Jewels series--powerful females who are easily damaged, protective males who are even more powerful in their own right, a virtually omnipotent race (or in this case, races) of creatures who can easily overcome anything mere (ungifted) humans can dish out. There's a fundamental conservatism to these stories--sort of a nineteenth-century sensibility, one might say--in that the powerful rulers of lesser folks really do know better, and for the most part use their powers for good. In the BJ books, the evil Blood were defeated by the good Blood, and landen humans (people like us) were mostly irrelevant. Here, there are only a handful of decent humans, and the rest of them are greedy, petty, violent, and totally devoid of morals. Okay. I can accept that as a premise, if the world of the "better creatures" is truly interesting. It just isn't. The cassandra sangue (kind of an obvious name, really--couldn't she have called them something more exotic?) are vulnerable and kind of damaged girls (not women, really, at any age--the books present this as a good thing, but it's a bit disturbing) who need to protection of inhuman Master Races in order to defend themselves against Bad Humans. Of which there are many. That's the whole premise, basically. These Master Races are (mostly, but not completely) shapeshifters and vampires. Both of which have been overdone to death in paranormal fiction. They are mystified and enraged (by turns) with humans, and only seem to like the cassandras, because they are Special too. Oh, and "childlike." Every plot so far is basically the same--humans try to mess with the Others (Master Races), or the cassandras, and get swatted down. Hard. Because humans are dumb, and always forget what happened in the last book. *Sigh* The Black Jewels books were so much more than this! Moral quandaries, broken hierarchies, gender slipperiness, genuine dangers that made you hold on to your seat with regularity. I know it's mean to judge a new series by an old one, but I think I would find this one unexciting even had I not read the Jewels series. I like Bishop, and I guess I will try one more book, but I really can't get excited about them. I put this one down for months before picking it up again and giving it another go. My recommendation: if you're not sick to death of vampires and shapeshifters, if you don't mind adult women who are praised for remaining girls forever, and who are so vulnerable that every time they appear on the page, you think they might fall apart in some new way, give this series a try. Others seem to have liked it. But if you loved the Black Jewels, don't expect anything even near that caliber.
